Welcome to Monday. As we take time to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. today, weβre also reflecting on the role of local media. Dr. King understood the power of journalism to document injustice, shape public understanding and build moral urgency, and we strive to honor that by showing up, adding context and telling our communityβs story honestly. Whatever your role in our community is, we hope you take a moment today to reflect on his words and the values he challenged all of us to uphold.

Foundation begins community dialogue on transforming city's parks |
|
The Palm Springs Parks Foundation held its first community listening session Friday, gathering resident feedback on how to reimagine the city's parks and recreation facilities.
Driving the news: About two dozen people attended the session at the Hilton Palm Springs, sharing visions for parks that serve diverse needs β from water play and shade for families to quiet spaces for contemplation and architectural destinations that celebrate the city's heritage.
- The foundation, which established its nonprofit status about a year ago, will serve as the fundraising arm for the Parks and Recreation Department while collaborating on shade, water features and park activation.
What they're saying: Residents identified water play and shade as critical missing elements forcing families to travel to other desert cities for park amenities.
- "I was really struck by the lack of mainly water and shade, and I found myself driving to other desert cities or leaving Palm Springs," said board member Katherine Hatch, who moved to the city with young children.
The vision: Several participants called for creating destination parks that attract visitors beyond families with children, citing examples like New York's High Line and Chicago's Millennium Park as models.
What's next: The foundation will hold additional listening sessions across different neighborhoods throughout Palm Springs over the next 60 to 90 days, then compile a final report to inform its strategic plan.
- The organization is currently accepting applications for new board members via this form.
