Thursday, Dec. 4 | β˜€οΈ 65Β°/48Β°

Welcome to Thursday! During a live taping of a roundtable on Coachella Valley issues Wednesday evening (catch the taped broadcast of AirTalk with Larry Mantle here later today), panelist Wayne Avrashow highlighted the poor state and infrequent use of the Palm Springs train station. Just hours later, the problem was echoed in a KESQ story about Amtrak skipping scheduled stops at the station. Will we ever have consistent rail service here? Maybe. While a broad environmental study for potential improvements was approved in 2022, key details like station sites, funding, and construction timelines remain uncertain.

South Palm Springs housing project faces opposition over wildlife concerns

A developer's plan to build 98 single-family homes on 22 acres in south Palm Springs is meeting resistance from neighbors who say the site is critical habitat. The application was filed under a state law designed to speed housing approvals.

Driving the news: The project at 770 South La Mirada Road calls for homes ranging from 2,083 to 3,000 square feet, with 16 units designated as affordable housing. Developer Steve Sheldon submitted the application Oct. 20 under SB 330, which allows waivers for reduced lot sizes and setbacks.

Why it matters: Opponents say the desert parcel sits along a wildlife corridor used by bighorn sheep and other native species. A newly formed group called Friends of the Tahquitz Wildlife Corridor argues construction would disrupt animal movement and habitat.

  • "It's well documented that Madelyn Hinsvark intentionally preserved her 22-acre parcel as a sanctuary for wildlife," group member Elizabeth Matzner said.

What they're saying: The neighborhood group says it supports housing but contends this location is unsuitable because of wildlife movement, wildfire risk, traffic concerns and water supply issues.

  • Oswit Land Trust, which has led past conservation efforts in Palm Springs, also backs the opposition, calling the proposal "another example of outside business interests" pursuing large-scale foothill development.

What's next: The project is in pre-application review, and city officials have not scheduled public hearings. Planning Director Chris Hadwin said his staff is awaiting more information before formal review can begin.

🏌️ Council could reconsider golf rate hikes after backlash

  • The Palm Springs City Council could consider maintaining current resident golf rates at Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort on Dec. 10 after dozens of golfers protested increases of up to 73% that took effect in September. The new fees raised peak-season weekend rates from $70 to $121 and weekday rates from $58 to $95.
  • The decision to recommend keeping rates unchanged comes after golfers packed the October Parks and Recreation Commission meeting to question the calculations used to justify new fees that took effect last month and to urge commissioners to give the golf community a voice in future decisions. Staff will present the rate analysis to the council at its Dec. 10 meeting.
  • Bottom line: While the council will consider maintaining the old rates, members of the Parks and Recreation Commission voted unanimously at their last meeting to form a golf course ad hoc committee to better represent users at Tahquitz Creek and O'Donnell Golf Course, acknowledging the golf community "has been underrepresented."

AND FINALLY ...

The Palm Springs Public Library is marking 100 years of service with a community celebration on Sunday, proving that even in the digital age, there's still something special about a good library card.

Driving the news: The centennial celebration runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the library's temporary Rimrock Plaza location, 4721 East Palm Canyon Drive, featuring music, historical photos, commemorative giveaways, a selfie booth, and cake.

  • Services are being offered at the temporary location while the main library undergoes a two-to-three-year renovation.

The backstory: What began as a small outbuilding called Alliene's Library moved through a dozen sites before the city's incorporation led to a permanent home.

  • The Welwood Murray Memorial Library opened in 1941, operating until a William F. Cody-designed facility opened in Sunrise Park on Dec. 7, 1975.

Why it matters: Beyond books, the library helped establish other valley libraries, played a role in forming the Palm Springs Historical Society and Channel 17 Community Television, and became the first U.S. public library to serve as a Passport Acceptance Agency.

Details: The temporary location sits at Gene Autry Trail and Palm Canyon Drive, next to Vons. For information, call 760-322-7323 or visit www.pslibrary.org.
