Thursday, Feb. 5 | ☁️ 76°/56°

Hey, everyone, it's Thursday (AKA 'Friday Junior')! If you're part of an organization in need, you might want to note that The Desert Healthcare District & Foundation Board just boosted their grant budget by $3 million after an unprecedented surge in funding requests β€” nine applications totaling over $15 million β€” nearly wiped out their usual $5 million annual budget by the end of 2025. With the March 1 deadline approaching, local nonprofits serving valley residents now have a renewed opportunity to secure funding for essential programs and services. Want to know more? Go here.

Police, residents agree on parking restrictions near airport, new COD campus

Palm Springs police and residents agreed Wednesday to restrict overnight parking on streets near Palm Springs International Airport and the under-construction College of the Desert campus to curb long-term parking, commercial vehicle storage and street camping.

Driving the news: Lt. Mike Torres presented the plan during a meeting with more than two dozen residents at the police department's training center, addressing years of complaints about travelers avoiding airport fees, Turo rental vehicles stored on public streets and people living in cars.

  • The restrictions will affect Baristo Road between El Cielo Road and Farrell Drive, plus portions of Civic Drive between East Baristo Road and East Tahquitz Canyon Way.

Why it matters: Airport parking prices have increased while the College of the Desert campus approaches its 2027 opening with an expected 12,500 students, raising concerns that parking pressures will intensify without intervention.

What's next: Police could install signage within weeks, with enforcement beginning through citations. Vehicles not moved within 72 hours could be towed.

  • Officials agreed to implement the changes as a six-month trial period.

The big picture: Mayor Naomi Soto said the city is exploring broader policy changes to address commercial use of public streets, though those measures require legal review.

BRIEFLY

A slide shown to the audience during a virtual meeting on Palm Springs zoning changes shows the possible footprints of different size buildings in parts of the city.

🏘️ At virtual meeting, officials stress zoning code update still in draft form

  • Palm Springs planning officials stressed that proposed zoning code changes remain in draft form during a virtual meeting Wednesday, following a heated Jan. 26 in-person session where residents criticized proposals that could bring five-story buildings to commercial corridors near single-family neighborhoods.
  • Director of Planning Services Christopher Hadwin told roughly 30 participants the city is modernizing regulations that haven't been updated in nearly 45 years. Questions focused on state housing law interpretations, parking requirements and whether changes would produce affordable housing for workers.
  • Bottom line: The project is about halfway through a two-year process and has not been endorsed by decision makers or City Council. The city must plan for 1,700 additional housing units by the end of 2029 to meet state requirements.
