Meet Megan Robinson

When Megan Robinson moved to Palm Springs, she found herself unexpectedly bored β€” not because there was nothing to do, but because much of what she found didn’t feel culturally relevant. She sensed there were events and spaces welcoming to people of color, but they weren’t easy to find.

Originally from the suburbs of Philadelphia, Robinson had dreamed of living in Palm Springs since her first visit two decades ago, when she landed a teaching job in nearby Joshua Tree. She was drawn to the desert’s natural beauty and to Palm Springs’ layered diversity, where multiple minority communities coexist.

As a Black woman, Robinson said those dynamics mattered. β€œYou put all that together, that’s likely going to be a safe space for me,” she said, noting the city’s LGBTQ+ community, large Latino population and the reality of living on Native land.

After two years of searching for inclusive events, Robinson began compiling her own weekly calendar of concerts, hikes, fitness groups, art shows and community gatherings that celebrate and welcome people of color. In March 2025, she launched the calendar publicly on Instagram as @palmspringsincolour.

The response was immediate. The account grew from a few hundred followers to nearly 5,000 within months, and Robinson began hearing from people who found friends, community and belonging through the events she shared. What started as a personal search quickly became a community connector.

That momentum led Robinson to launch the Palm Springs in Colour Social Club in late 2025, a membership-based community offering curated events, meetups and local partnerships. She sees the project as part of a broader moment in Palm Springs β€” one where new voices and communities are stepping forward.

β€œI’m glad I was called to be here as it all comes together,” she said.

MADE POSSIBLE BY

Name: Megan Robinson

Age: 42

Born and raised: Born in Trenton, NJ; raised in Southeastern Pennsylvania just outside of Philadelphia

Years in the desert: Joshua Tree 2006 - 2008; Palm Springs since 2021

What brought you here?  In 2006, I landed a teaching job in the Hi-Desert in pursuit of a professional dancing career post-undergrad. The desert is much closer to Los Angeles than Pennsylvania 😊. In 2021, I had a desire for a soft, easier, peaceful life post-LA.

What keeps you here? Community - amazingly kind and supportive friends and neighbors.

Favorite time of the year: Spring

How do you beat the heat? Move slower, find AC, take a few trips to the coast.

Favorite place to go or thing to do:  Dance to R&B, reggae, Afrobeats, Soca, or hip-hop.

Favorite place to eat:  Peruvian Fuego

Where would you take first-time visitors? Downtown Indio for the combo of shops, art and city planning; most of my visitors have never heard of Indio and are always impressed and appreciate learning more about the Coachella Valley.

What’s missing in Palm Springs? social spaces that don’t revolve around drinking or loud music.

What's the biggest issue facing our community? A narrow definition of diversity, and lack of representation.

Where would you put your walk of fame star in the city? Near Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar because they have incredible R&B musicians, so I can visit my star and listen to culturally-aligned music.

What’s your guilty pleasure: Rewatching Black sitcoms (Living Single, Girlfriends, Martin, Fresh Prince).
