TGIF and happy eve of Super Bowl Sunday eve, a day we just made up because Mark is very excited about watching his beloved Seahawks in the Big Game. No matter what your plans call for this weekend, we'd like to remind you that thousands of cyclists will be on city (and valley) roadways on Saturday for the annual Tour de Palm Springs. While it's always a good idea to share the road, we hope you have a bit of extra patience during the event. Check out this link for maps of the routes from 1 mile (fun!) to 101 miles (ouch!).

🎢 Setting the mood: "DtMF" by Bad Bunny (You still got time to brush up on the lyrics before the halftime show)

LEADING OFF

Dr. James Danoff-Burg speaks to the audience gathered at Mizell Center about efforts to protect native plants and animals in the desert.

In Palm Springs talk, expert urges residents to protect rare desert ecosystems

The Coachella Valley's extraordinary biodiversity β€” rivaling Hawaii's β€” faces mounting environmental threats that residents can help address through simple actions like planting native species and removing invasive weeds.

Driving the news: Dr. James Danoff-Burg of The Living Desert told roughly 50 people at a Jan. 8 presentation at Mizell Center that the valley's dramatic elevation changes create one of the most biologically diverse regions in the United States, hosting nearly every ecosystem found in North America.

  • The region includes species found nowhere else, including Casey's June beetle, which exists only in a three-mile stretch of Palm Canyon wash.

Why it matters: Climate change has altered rainfall patterns, concentrating precipitation into intense storms that create deep erosion and lower water tables, threatening fragile desert habitats and the unique species they support.

What they're doing: The Living Desert now operates 105 conservation projects across 12 countries, with nearly half in Southern California, including installing 453 rock dams in the Orocopia Mountains to slow water flow and prevent erosion.

  • The organization is working with partners including Oswit Land Trust and the Torres Martinez tribe on restoration efforts and preparing habitat for potential reintroduction of Sonoran pronghorn.

What you can do: Danoff-Burg urged residents to remove lawns, plant native species from local nurseries rather than big-box stores, and pull invasive weeds like Sahara Mustard during walks.

  • Even apartment dwellers can help by planting natives in pots on balconies to support pollinators.

VillageFest, the popular Thursday night event in Downtown Palm Springs, is getting a marketing overhaul. (File Photo)

🎨 VillageFest brand revitalization plan targets perception, engagement

  • Palm Springs VillageFest has strong brand recognition but needs to counter a "swap meet" perception and strengthen its storytelling, according to a presentation during a Jan. 26 board meeting. Barbara Beran from Tripepi Smith outlined a comprehensive marketing strategy focused on revitalizing the 35-year-old weekly event's brand and elevating the visitor experience.
  • The marketing plan includes four seasonal campaigns designed to keep VillageFest fresh year-round and re-engage locals who feel they have already experienced the event. Beran emphasized VillageFest deserves intentional, consistent visual storytelling similar to major brands that are recognizable without logos.
  • Bottom line: Tripepi Smith conducted community listening sessions and established five metrics to measure success, targeting attendees, vendors, performers and community partners. A website overhaul estimated at $24,000 is also needed to support digital engagement tools.

AND FINALLY ...

Prescott Preserve's palm oasis, devastated by a fire on Sunday, is showing early signs of recovery as wildlife returns and restoration efforts accelerate with community support.

Driving the news: In an email to the community sent Wednesday, Oswit Land Trust, which manages the preserve, reported that turtles have reemerged after debris removal and consultation with environmental specialists has begun to restore pond health and wildlife habitat.

The damage: The fire burned approximately 3.5 acres and an estimated 100 palm trees surrounding the ponds between Farrell Drive and Compadre Road, with trails on the east side of Farrell remaining closed.

Recovery efforts: Staff and volunteers have cleared fire-damaged debris from the ponds, installed floating platforms for turtles and birds, and are planning multi-level bat houses to replace lost habitat.

  • Pond specialists are being consulted on water quality improvements, including additional aerators and beneficial bacteria.

The silver lining: Biologists and ecologists have assured the organization that most large native palm trees are expected to recover, as they have following similar fires elsewhere in the Coachella Valley.

What's next: The preserve is expanding camera coverage for security and evaluating native trees and shrubs to restore habitat for migratory water birds.
